The University Outing Club was founded in 1931 at Rutgers University in
New Brunswick, NJ. Professors, townspeople and their families were the
first members.  Sharing a desire to be outdoors, they organized weekend
outings, hikes, kayaking trips etc.

The first president was Dr.Earle Perkins. See article under 'Historic information'

Today the club's membership is open to the general public and all those
who enjoy spending time outdoors, learning about their natural environment and
taking excursions to nearby places of interest.

The club's various activities include day hikes, visits to museums,
gardens and historic sites.
It regularly does volunteer trail maintenance and
public park gardening projects in Central Jersey.
There are dinner meetings with
speakers on topics related to our activities.

The club is affiliated with the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference.

In Memory of John Clyde

John Clyde, UOC’s past Program Chair, VP and President passed away on Jan 24, 2019 at the age of 63.
We will miss John at our UOC gatherings. He led or participated in many of our activities.
He was always helpful, positive, willing to help work out problems. He was fun –
he had many a good time and enjoyed life despite his health problems. He had two heart transplants
and was dedicated to the transplant community, participating in many of their activities.
He was dedicated to his family and children, for example, being involved in Boy Scouts
for many years. He was a community leader in Franklin Township known for working well
with people of all political parties. He served for 20 years on the Township Council, for a year as
Mayor and also on the Environmental Commission participating in and leading stream clean-ups.
Fittingly, Franklin Township has announced the “John Clyde First Annual Memorial Spring Stream
Clean Up” to take place on Saturday April 13, 2019.
And for our first spring outing, UOC will participate in this clean-up as listed in this Cairn.

On a more personal note, here are some comments from UOC members: He wasn’t just a friend –
he had a warmth and love for everything – he was a joy to be with. The best friend.
Always willing to help out. A humble man. The nicest guy ever!
Fine and classy. Always went the extra step. In one word John was “Gold” .

We will miss John.
